RTW – Blame it on the Wildwinds

Road Trip Wednesday is a “Blog Carnival,” where YA Highway’s contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question and answer it on our own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody’s unique take on the topic.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Yeah, that’s not an easy question.  I’m chalk full of crazy…or is it stupid?  The two can be easily confused when it comes to me. 😀

I’ve done everything from jumping out of a moving car and off the roof of a house (all on a dare) to working in the mall on Black Friday (though that one’s more suicidal than crazy).  But the craziest thing (in my opinion anyway) has to be the bungee jumping.  This is strange considering my roof jumping escapade, I know, but I’m terrified of heights.  They scare me more than spiders if you can imagine.

Well, that’s not true.  The heights don’t bother me as much as the falling.  More specifically, the abrupt, squishy stop at that comes at the end of the falling.

Awhile back I had a story where the mc has to bungee off a bridge.  I was having issues writing the scene–sure I’m an expert at falling from stuff, but I just wasn’t feeling it.  My brilliant solution to the problem?  Do it myself!  Hell, that’ll make it authentic, right!?

Right…

Insanity–all in the name of research.  Do I think it helped my scene?  Um…no?  The only thing I actually remember was feeling like I was going to yak and mind numbing terror.  I don’t regret it though.  It’s just another thing I can add to my Been There, Done That list!

So fess up!  What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

That’s awesome! What a cool thing to do for research–even if it was terrifying!

I guess I’d have to say scuba diving. Now, to put this into perspective, I’m afraid of water. I hate driving over bridges over water. And the longer the bridge, the worse I get. I’ve had nightmares of driving off a bridge into the water. I can’t even go underwater without holding my nose. So I learned how to scuba dive. And I loved it. It’s definitely not as scary as bungee jumping, but I haven’t been bungee jumping. Closest I can come to that is repelling down the side of a three story building. That was fun, too. Sorry, I’m just more boring than you. Or less insane. But if the books come out more authentic, keep it up!

  3. I like how jumping out of the moving car isn’t as crazy as bungee jumping. That made me laugh.

Oh my. The mall on Black Friday. I’ve done that, too. Luckily, I worked the midday shift and neither opened nor closed!

And bungee jumping, wow! I think I’d rather sky dive than bungee jump. Somehow the bungee part just really scares me!

  5. Yikes! Bungee jumping is something I would never, ever consider doing. I HATE heights! You are crazy brave!

  6. okay, abrupt, squishy stop made me LOL.
I haven’t bungeed, though this jungle tarzan swing thing I did came close. I’m definitely afraid of the falling. and the jumping. okay fine, the whole thing.

I don’t know what the craziest thing I’ve ever done was, but bungee jumping when scared of heights is kind of amazingly impressive. That you did it to make it more real for writing out a scene with your characters is astounding. That is dedication to the authenticity of your work!

wow, that is dedication to your story!! Sorry it didn’t help though, but what a cool story. 🙂
